Scientific, Educational and Research Activities

Designing the optimal model for providing supportive and palliative services based on scientific resources and adapting to the today’s needs of society in Iran is one of the main mission of the MACSA for cancer prevention and control. Currently, MACSA is the largest and most professional health care center in the field of supportive and palliative care in Iran. MACSA has been ratified a treaty with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education to charge of providing supportive and palliative care services in Iran.

In order to explain the supportive and palliative care position in the cancer control program, many measures have been taken like holding and attending various provincial and national workshops and conferences, holding various meetings with health system managers at the level of the Ministry of Health, collaboration with medical educators, provincial management bodies, charities and provincial donors, media directors and institutions, and individuals and legal entities.

The center, through collecting the experiences, documenting and modeling the organizational processes, has developed the medical-care protocols and formats needed to provide supportive and palliative care services. The most important achievement in this field is “The Home Care Network”, which is the first and largest one that has provided more than 10,000 visits for cancer patients. In this regard, the online medical file and home care network software has been designed and implemented.

by using the web-based system, all patient’s medical data are electronically updated, and also the planning of home care services is done accurately. All recorded information is available for clinical planning and research purposes.

A team of religious scholars, psychiatrists and psychologists were formed in order to develop the foundations, content, plans, and services needed for spiritual care. This team, in 3-years of clinical and research activity, published 6 volumes of specialized books on the basic Solutions for providing spiritual care.

The first step in delivering clinical and scientific services is achieved through the efficient and expert training of human resources. There is a lack of supportive and palliative care in Iran. Also, many clinical and epidemiological issues in this field require extensive research. For this purpose, by forming a specialized committee and utilizing the scientific perspectives of experts, numerous educational and research programs have been designed and implemented.

On the other hand, an efficient model needs the participation of international universities and experts in science and education. In this regard, a cooperation agreement had been signed between MACSA and various universities and educational centers such as the Curie Institute, the University of Science of Tehran University, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Iran University of Medical Sciences and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.
