SELF-CARE

One of the most important things you should do as a caregiver – often overlooked – is to take care of yourself. If your mental health, as a patient caregiver, is damaged, you cannot be a caregiver for the person you love. Not paying attention to this simple principle (the principle of self-care) can have irreparable effects on your body and mind. These complications are mainly due to prolonged psychological stress along with heavy physical activity, which can be accompanied by conditions such as age, underlying illness, child care, work in hard jobs, and so on. For example, patients over the age of 65 experience more serious complications when seeking care. In spite of all these issues, caregivers often have the least participation in self-care activities in comparison with those who do not take care of the patient.

Caring for a family member, while being valuable and showing your emotion and commitment, is a heavy task that can be frustrating, distressing and stressful. This is the reason why the caregivers are more likely to develop problems like hypertension, high cholesterol, overweight, and depression.

Always keep in mind that you can never stop the effects of the disease on someone you care for. But you have the duty to maintain your health and make it better.
